In just a few hours, it will be time to hit the track. The Australian Grand Prix will kick off a 2025 F1 season that has all the makings of one of the most competitive ever, with Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull appearing to be very close.
During the three-day test in Bahrain, the four top teams played a game of hide-and-seek, avoiding revealing too much and focusing on work programs that leave Melbourne with several uncertainties to resolve. These doubts will start to clear once free practice begins, forcing teams to finally show their hand.
Toto Wolff reveals the gap to rivals
“We can’t wait to hit the track in Australia and start a new chapter in Mercedes’ history. We are eager to achieve new milestones, and it will take the effort of everyone, from the drivers to the mechanics,” said Toto Wolff ahead of the Australian weekend.
“With George and Kimi, we have a very strong lineup made up of two drivers who have grown with us. Experience, youth, and speed—these are the qualities of our drivers, and we are confident they will bring us a lot of satisfaction,” Toto Wolff continued.
The Silver Arrows’ Team Principal then assessed the competitive situation heading into the season opener. “Our rivals finished 2024 very strongly, and we know that Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull are slightly ahead at the start. We are very happy with the work done over the winter and in testing. Both drivers were very pleased with the W16, and we’re eager to see where we stand this weekend. Australia is always a magical place to start. The track is very interesting, and there is always an incredible energy,” Toto Wolff concluded ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, which will take place at the 5.278-kilometre Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne on Sunday, March 16.
