Ralf Schumacher believes Williams should have replaced Alexander Albon before the 2027 Formula 1 season, delivering a harsh assessment of the Thai driver’s recent performances. The former F1 driver has questioned whether Alexander Albon can recover from his current difficulties, pointing to his struggles against teammate Carlos Sainz and his collision with Fernando Alonso at the United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Despite Williams confirming Alexander Albon for the 2027 championship, Ralf Schumacher believes the team should already have considered a younger replacement. Speaking on Sky’s Backstage Boxengasse podcast, the German suggested that the 30-year-old has reached a difficult stage of his career, with recent mistakes and the improving performances of Carlos Sainz adding to the pressure.
Ralf Schumacher questions Alex Albon’s future at Williams
Alexander Albon has faced increasing difficulties in his comparison with Carlos Sainz during the 2026 Formula 1 season. As the Spanish driver has become more comfortable with the Williams car, the balance of performance between the two teammates has shifted, prompting Ralf Schumacher to question whether the Thai driver can maintain the level previously associated with him.
“I have the impression that Albon has reached his limit. Since Sainz found the right feeling with the car, Alex has struggled to match his pace. It’s a complicated situation that seems to be weighing heavily on him,” Ralf Schumacher observed.
The former Williams driver believes the difficulties are affecting Alexander Albon’s confidence and ability to compete consistently with his teammate. In his assessment, the situation has become particularly challenging as Carlos Sainz continues to extract more performance from the car.
Ralf Schumacher criticises Alexander Albon’s mistakes after Austin crash
Ralf Schumacher also highlighted the number of errors Alexander Albon has made recently, pointing to mistakes under braking and frequent complaints over team radio. Those concerns have become more prominent following the collision between Alexander Albon and Fernando Alonso at the United States Grand Prix, which also prompted criticism from the Aston Martin driver.
“He’s making too many mistakes, getting his braking wrong and constantly complaining over the radio. He’s no longer the driver we were used to seeing. I think he’s aware that, without a turnaround, his Formula 1 career could be nearing its end,” Ralf Schumacher continued.
The German’s comments reflect his concern that Alexander Albon is struggling to rediscover his previous form. However, his assessment remains a personal opinion rather than an indication that Williams intends to reconsider its confirmed driver line-up.
Schumacher believes Williams should have chosen a younger driver for 2027
Although Williams has already confirmed Alexander Albon for the 2027 Formula 1 season, Ralf Schumacher believes the team should have made a different decision. Rather than continuing with the experienced Thai driver, he would have preferred to see Williams offer the opportunity to a younger talent.
“In his place, I would have gone for a young driver for next year. In fact, I think it would have been better to make that decision even earlier,” Ralf Schumacher explained.
His comments represent a particularly strong criticism of Williams’ decision to retain Alexander Albon, especially given the driver’s previous contributions to the team. Nevertheless, Williams has publicly confirmed its commitment to keeping both Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz for 2027, meaning there is currently no indication of an immediate change to its line-up.
For Alexander Albon, the challenge will be to improve his performances and narrow the gap to Carlos Sainz as he prepares for another season with Williams. Ralf Schumacher, however, remains unconvinced that the Thai driver can reverse his current difficulties and believes the team should have taken a different direction.
