Kimi Antonelli’s historic victory at Monza has had a major impact on the 2026 Formula 1 championship, with the Mercedes driver now holding a 66-point advantage over his closest remaining rival, George Russell. If that margin remains intact, Antonelli could potentially clinch the F1 title with two races still to spare, putting Brazil and Las Vegas firmly in the spotlight.
The Bologna-born driver has opened a substantial gap over his direct challengers. Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris have slipped to 76 and 96 points behind respectively, leaving Mercedes team-mate George Russell as the only rival still realistically in contention. Yet even George Russell is now 66 points adrift after failing to capitalise on Kimi Antonelli’s grid penalty at Monza.
Kimi Antonelli’s Monza win transforms the 2026 F1 title race
Kimi Antonelli’s victory from 19th on the grid at Monza was historic for countless reasons, but its most immediate consequence was the size of his championship advantage.
George Russell had an extraordinary opportunity to reduce the deficit in Italy because of Antonelli’s grid penalty, but instead the gap grew. The Mercedes number 63 has, at least publicly, already played down his chances of mounting a comeback, and imagining anyone other than Kimi Antonelli becoming world champion at the end of the season now requires an increasingly dramatic change in momentum.
The situation has therefore moved beyond simply asking whether Antonelli can win the championship. With such a sizeable advantage, the more intriguing question is becoming when he might be able to secure it.
When could Kimi Antonelli clinch the 2026 F1 title?
Toto Wolff and Kimi Antonelli himself – who is particularly superstitious – may prefer not to look too far ahead, but calculating a possible title-clinching race is complicated by the uncertainty surrounding the final part of the championship calendar.
If Formula 1 ultimately does not race in Qatar or Abu Dhabi, as currently appears possible, and only the Yas Marina finale is replaced by a race at Imola, Kimi Antonelli would gain an additional advantage in the championship battle because his rivals would have one fewer Grand Prix in which to close the gap.
The currently scheduled 2026 Formula 1 calendar contains 23 rounds, but the status of the final events remains an important factor in determining exactly where the Drivers’ Championship could be settled.
Brazil or Las Vegas could host Antonelli’s title celebration
If Kimi Antonelli continues at his current pace, the Drivers’ Championship could return to Italy well before the final Grand Prix of the season. If his 66-point advantage remains unchanged, he would secure the title with two races remaining.
That means the decisive celebration could take place either at Interlagos or in Las Vegas, depending on whether the calendar is reduced to 22 Grands Prix or remains at the 23 rounds currently planned.
Either would provide a particularly memorable setting. Brazil is the home of Ayrton Senna, the driver Kimi Antonelli has always identified as his idol. Las Vegas also has recent title-clinching history: Max Verstappen secured the World Championship on the Strip in 2024.
There would be only one minor complication for Antonelli if the celebrations took place in Nevada. At 20 years old, he would still be below the legal drinking age in the United States.
Antonelli’s points trend could bring the title even earlier
There is no guarantee that Kimi Antonelli’s advantage over George Russell will remain at 66 points. Judging by the Mercedes number 12’s performance trend this season, the gap could continue to grow during the coming weeks.
So far, Antonelli has gained an average of five points per Grand Prix over George Russell. If he maintained that rate, the championship could potentially be settled even earlier, somewhere between Austin and Mexico City, again depending on how many races ultimately remain on the calendar.
The scale of the challenge facing George Russell was already evident after Monza, when he played down the prospect of an F1 title comeback as Antonelli’s advantage reached 66 points.
There is still plenty of racing ahead and caution remains understandable, particularly in a championship where circumstances can change quickly. But on the current trajectory, Formula 1 fans may want to keep their weekends free between late October and late November. Kimi Antonelli could have something very significant to celebrate before the 2026 season reaches its final Grand Prix.
