Ralf Schumacher Strongly Opposes Valtteri Bottas Potentially Joining Cadillac’s Formula 1 Line-up
As the highly anticipated entry of the Cadillac team into the Formula 1 World Championship draws closer for the 2026 season, speculation continues to swirl around the identities of the drivers who will represent the new American outfit. While no official announcement has been made by the team, several names have emerged through media rumours and paddock speculation as possible candidates for the two available seats.
Among the most frequently mentioned names are former Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez, current Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher, and the two ex-teammates from the Sauber team—Guanyu Zhou and Valtteri Bottas. The latter, a ten-time Grand Prix winner, currently serves as a third driver for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, after a lacklustre campaign with Sauber in 2024.
Ralf Schumacher Criticises Bottas and Questions His Suitability for Cadillac
One figure who has openly voiced strong opposition to the idea of Valtteri Bottas joining the new Cadillac Formula 1 project is Ralf Schumacher. The former Formula 1 race winner and current pundit for Sky Deutschland—and also the uncle of Mick Schumacher—believes that the Finnish driver is not the right choice for a team preparing to enter the sport in such a competitive era.
In Ralf Schumacher’s view, Valtteri Bottas’ disappointing performances during the 2024 Formula 1 season with Sauber, where he partnered with Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou, make him an unsuitable option. Bottas ended that year with zero points, finishing behind Zhou in the final standings, and ultimately concluding the season in last place among the full-time drivers.
According to Schumacher, “If you look at where the Sauber team was last year and where they are now, the answer is Bottas.” The former Williams and Toyota driver suggested that Bottas’ contribution to the team’s performance had been insufficient and pointed to the statistics as evidence of his argument.
Geopolitical Concerns and Alternative Suggestions
In addition to questioning Bottas’ competitiveness, Ralf Schumacher also raised concerns regarding Guanyu Zhou, citing current geopolitical tensions between the United States and China as a factor that could complicate his candidacy for a seat with the American-based Cadillac team. He stated, “I cannot even imagine Guanyu Zhou being a realistic option, because the United States and China do not exactly have a strong relationship at this moment in time.”
Instead, Ralf Schumacher proposed a driver line-up he believes would better suit Cadillac’s debut in Formula 1: a combination of Sergio Perez and Mick Schumacher. The German pundit sees potential in his nephew, despite Mick Schumacher not having had a full-time seat since his departure from Haas at the end of the 2022 season.
“When I look at the current pool of drivers who are still available, with some experience and room for growth, Mick Schumacher is undoubtedly one of the top candidates,” he asserted. “He has significant potential and should not be underestimated.”
Regarding Sergio Perez, who is expected to leave Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2025 season, Schumacher added: “When you consider what came after him at Red Bull, in comparison to Max Verstappen, one could argue that Pérez deserves a fair evaluation. Of course, if he also brings some financial backing, which is very important for a new team starting out, I could definitely see him as part of the Cadillac line-up.”
With Cadillac preparing to enter Formula 1 as part of a collaboration with Andretti Global and General Motors, the choice of drivers will be a crucial factor in determining the success of their debut season. While no decisions have been finalised yet, Ralf Schumacher’s comments are sure to add fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the team’s future direction.
