McLaren now dominates pit stops too: double sub-2 second stops in Hungary. McLaren sets a new fastest pit stop record of 1.94 seconds at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren Sets New Pit Stop Record with Two Identical 1.94-Second Stops at the Hungarian Grand Prix

The McLaren Formula 1 Team continues its impressive rise in the 2025 Formula 1 season, now setting the benchmark not only on the track but also in the pit lane. During the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, the Woking-based outfit achieved two record-breaking pit stops—each completed in just 1.94 seconds—for drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Papaya Power Extends to Pit Lane as McLaren Targets Total Dominance

From the beginning of the 2025 Formula 1 season, Ferrari had emerged as the leading team in terms of pit stop performance. The Italian outfit consistently demonstrated incredible efficiency, recording the fastest tyre changes in eight of the first ten races of the season. Ferrari’s mechanics had proven themselves to be the best in the business, setting the standard with consistent sub-2-second stops.

However, in recent races, the momentum has begun to shift. Red Bull Racing and, more significantly, McLaren have surged forward to challenge Ferrari’s supremacy in the pit lane. In Budapest, McLaren took the lead in style, not only winning the race on track but also setting a new benchmark for pit stop speed.

Two Perfect Pit Stops: 1.94 Seconds for Norris and Piastri

During Sunday’s race at the Hungaroring, McLaren executed two flawless and identical pit stops—both clocking in at just 1.94 seconds. These stops, performed separately for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, matched each other to the hundredth of a second and set the new fastest pit stop time of the 2025 season.

This record-breaking performance beat the previous best of 2.00 seconds, which had been achieved by Ferrari’s pit crew earlier in the season—first at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and then again at the Monaco Grand Prix. McLaren’s achievement marks a major statement, as they continue to target excellence in every area of race weekend execution.

Ferrari Still Leads the 2025 Pit Stop Championship

Despite the remarkable performance from McLaren in Hungary, Ferrari remains at the top of the 2025 pit stop leaderboard. With a total of 389 points earned so far in the official DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award standings, the Scuderia continues to hold a solid lead.

McLaren, however, is closing the gap. With their recent form and the latest success in Hungary, the Woking team has climbed to second place in the standings with 241 points. Red Bull Racing currently sits in third position with 197 points.

Also worth noting is that Red Bull’s mechanics managed to dip below the two-second barrier in Hungary as well, executing a 1.97-second stop on Yuki Tsunoda’s car—an impressive effort that shows just how competitive the top teams have become in the art of the perfect pit stop.

As the second half of the 2025 season unfolds, the battle for pit lane supremacy is becoming just as fierce as the fight for the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships. With Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull all capable of sub-2-second stops, every tenth of a second counts.
