Ralf Schumacher has reignited the debate surrounding Lance Stroll’s future in Formula 1 by openly criticising the Canadian driver and naming Leonardo Fornaroli as his ideal long-term replacement at Aston Martin. According to the former German driver, Stroll no longer has the credentials to remain either with the Silverstone-based team or in the Formula 1 paddock.
The name put forward as a potential successor to Stroll at Aston Martin is clear and unequivocal: Leonardo Fornaroli.
After an encouraging first part of the season, Stroll suffered a significant drop in performance when compared to Fernando Alonso. The Canadian finished the year 23 points behind the Spanish driver, with the gap particularly evident in qualifying. Race pace also highlighted clear limitations, reinforcing doubts about his overall competitiveness.
“Fornaroli deserves Stroll’s car”
Speaking on the Sky Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher did not hold back. “To be honest, this situation is no longer acceptable,” the former Formula 1 driver said. “When I see how well the Formula 2 winner, Leonardo Fornaroli, has performed, he would deserve a car like the Aston Martin a thousand times more.” The message was direct and uncompromising: talent should always come first.
Leonardo Fornaroli claimed the Formula 2 title at his first attempt, having already won the Formula 3 championship the previous year. Achieving back-to-back titles in the junior categories places him in a very exclusive group of drivers. In Schumacher’s view, a profile like this cannot be left outside Formula 1, and Aston Martin would represent a natural and logical destination.
The issue also directly involves the team’s ownership. “I’m curious to see what will happen, because even Lawrence Stroll cannot continue to ignore the situation,” Ralf Schumacher explained. “In my opinion, he is a driver who should no longer be in Formula 1.”
The Silverstone team has already shifted its full focus towards 2026, effectively sacrificing the current season to prepare for the new technical era. With Adrian Newey set to play a key role in designing the next generation of cars, Aston Martin will need drivers capable of fully exploiting such an ambitious project. In this context, Leonardo Fornaroli would represent an investment in pure talent, and Leonardo Fornaroli increasingly looks like the right name to take over Lance Stroll’s seat.
