Racing Bulls has taken a remarkable step towards Formula 1’s leading teams at the Belgian Grand Prix after a major upgrade transformed the performance of the VCARB-03. Arvid Lindblad qualified eighth at Spa-Francorchamps, finishing only 0.127 seconds behind Oscar Piastri and placing the Faenza-based team firmly among the established front-runners.
The result represented much more than another routine Q3 appearance. Racing Bulls has regularly reached the final qualifying segment during recent weekends, but its Belgian Grand Prix performance suggested that the team has significantly reduced the gap to McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull.
Racing Bulls introduces major VCARB-03 upgrade at Spa
Racing Bulls made several important modifications to the VCARB-03 for the Belgian Grand Prix. The most significant change concerned the shape of the airbox, although it formed only one part of a wider technical package.
The Faenza team also revised the engine cover, the front brake drum assembly and the rear wing. Taken together, those modifications delivered a substantial increase in the car’s overall performance potential at Spa-Francorchamps.
The Belgian circuit presents a particularly difficult aerodynamic compromise. Teams require sufficient downforce through high-speed corners such as Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Pouhon and Blanchimont, while also limiting drag along the extended full-throttle sections. The wide range of developments introduced across the grid was examined in a detailed Spa pit-lane technical analysis.
Racing Bulls appears to have found an effective balance between aerodynamic load, cooling requirements and straight-line efficiency. The improvements also helped the team optimise its power unit management, another crucial performance factor at Spa.
Racing Bulls can afford to dream bigger
The combined effect of the upgrades gave the VCARB-03 a considerable performance boost. Kimi Antonelli secured pole position with a lap of 1:44.361, while Max Verstappen was the next-fastest driver after setting a 1:44.678.
Behind them, however, Lando Norris, George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri were all separated by approximately 0.350 seconds. That group included every driver from Formula 1’s leading teams, demonstrating just how closely matched the front of the grid had become.
Oscar Piastri secured seventh place with a lap of 1:45.016. Isack Hadjar’s position was not considered representative because the French driver is due to start the race from the pit lane following a power unit change.
Racing Bulls had generally limited itself to reaching Q3 during the previous race weekends. At Spa, however, the team made a surprising leap forward following the introduction of its important upgrade package.
Arvid Lindblad finishes just 0.127 seconds behind Oscar Piastri
Liam Lawson was unable to maximise the VCARB-03’s potential and was eliminated in Q2. Arvid Lindblad, by contrast, delivered an impressive performance during his first Belgian Grand Prix weekend as a Formula 1 driver.
Arvid Lindblad qualified eighth with a lap time of 1:45.143. That placed him only 0.127 seconds behind Oscar Piastri’s McLaren, an exceptionally small margin considering the difference in resources and expectations between the two teams.
The result also underlined the scale of Racing Bulls’ progress. Rather than merely defeating the traditional midfield teams, the VCARB-03 was able to compete directly with cars from McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari over a qualifying lap.
Liam Lawson’s Q2 elimination means the team did not fully exploit the potential of both cars. Nevertheless, Arvid Lindblad’s performance offered convincing evidence that the speed was genuine and that the technical update had delivered the intended improvement.
Audi and Alpine struggle as Racing Bulls moves clear
The comparison with Audi and Alpine made Racing Bulls’ performance even more striking. Gabriel Bortoleto was the fastest driver outside the leading group in the Audi, but his 1:45.628 lap left him almost half a second behind Arvid Lindblad.
Pierre Gasly finished 12th for Mercedes-powered Alpine, one position behind Liam Lawson, after recording a disappointing 1:46.331. The French team has already acknowledged that Racing Bulls has established a significant performance advantage over several midfield rivals.
The Spa results therefore reinforced the impression that the competitive order behind the leading teams has changed. Audi and Alpine struggled to match the pace, while Racing Bulls moved closer to the group traditionally expected to fight near the front.
Improved power unit management strengthens Racing Bulls
Racing Bulls produced a major statement of intent at Spa-Francorchamps. The upgrades worked, while the management of the power unit also improved considerably.
Electrical energy deployment is especially important at the Belgian circuit because the available energy must be distributed carefully across several long acceleration zones. Poor deployment can leave a car without sufficient electrical assistance before the end of a straight, creating a substantial lap-time loss.
The improved efficiency of the VCARB-03 package appears to have helped Racing Bulls use its available energy more effectively. That progress, combined with the revised aerodynamics, allowed Arvid Lindblad to remain close to the leading cars throughout the lap rather than losing heavily on Spa’s straights.
Rear-wing performance has been a particularly important subject during the Belgian Grand Prix weekend. Red Bull, for example, has been evaluating whether to move away from its recent Macarena rear-wing concept, highlighting the importance of finding the correct balance between reliability, downforce and aerodynamic efficiency.
Racing Bulls closes the gap to Formula 1’s top teams
On the evidence of qualifying at Spa, Racing Bulls can now target more than simply becoming Formula 1’s fifth-fastest team. The shrinking gap suggests the Faenza operation may also be capable of challenging the established top teams under favourable conditions.
It may still be premature to expect Racing Bulls to defeat McLaren over the Belgian Grand Prix race distance. Qualifying performance does not automatically guarantee the same level of competitiveness during a full race, when tyre degradation, fuel loads, strategy and consistency become increasingly important.
Nevertheless, the difference is becoming extremely small. Arvid Lindblad’s position just behind Oscar Piastri demonstrated that Racing Bulls is no longer separated from the leading group by an insurmountable margin.
If the VCARB-03 upgrade continues to perform effectively at different circuits, the Faenza team could achieve several impressive results in the not-too-distant future. Spa has shown that Racing Bulls is increasingly capable of looking beyond the midfield and towards Formula 1’s leading teams.
The Belgian Grand Prix weekend may therefore represent an important turning point. Racing Bulls arrived with a heavily revised car, improved its power unit management and placed Arvid Lindblad within 0.127 seconds of a McLaren. For a team that had previously considered reaching Q3 a successful result, that is a significant and highly encouraging step forward.
