Liam Lawson shines in Baku with a career-best fifth place
Liam Lawson delivered an impressive weekend in Baku, qualifying in third and finishing fifth on Sunday. While this marks the New Zealander’s best career result in Formula 1, he showed mixed emotions when speaking to the media.
The team gave everything
“It was quite an intense weekend. Obviously, it’s a bit disappointing, considering where we started, and realistically we didn’t have the pace to fight with the guys at the front today. But we stayed hopeful and gave everything today, even though it simply wasn’t enough. P5 is still a great result for us, especially in the current championship. Huge thanks to the team—we had a good car all weekend, and I’m happy to bring home some points,” the New Zealander said.
Of course, Formula 1 drivers never aim for P5—they always target the podium. But according to Liam Lawson, this was “the best we could do” on Sunday.
Strong race performance despite Mercedes advantage
Lawson’s race started very well, but the Mercedes drivers clearly had more pace, finishing second and fourth. Still, Lawson’s performance was very solid, and the team secured a total of 11 points, overtaking Aston Martin in the constructors’ championship.
Isack Hadjar also contributed with 1 point, finishing tenth behind the Ferrari drivers. For the Frenchman, the weekend was more challenging: he qualified in eighth and faced hydraulic issues on the grid, which the team promptly resolved.
“I had some bad feelings with the car all weekend,” admitted Isack. “I didn’t feel comfortable, but despite that we reached Q3 and then brought home double points. So yes, this gives me a lot of positive signals that once I’m comfortable with the car, we’ll perform much better.”
