According to reports from Sky News in the UK and other media outlets, Microsoft, one of the world’s largest technology companies, has decided to place its bet on Mercedes. The American tech giant is expected to become one of Mercedes’ most prominent sponsors for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The partnership is set to be officially unveiled on Thursday 22 January, during the presentation of the Mercedes W17, the single-seater that will compete in the 2026 championship with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli as the team’s drivers.
The key detail is the value of the agreement. The contract is reportedly worth around 60 million dollars per year. While Mercedes are no strangers to collaborations with major technology companies, this move carries a different significance. Microsoft has previously worked in Formula 1 with teams such as Renault and Alpine, including during the 2025 season, but now appears ready to take on a far more central role in the world of motorsport.
This sponsorship goes beyond a simple financial investment. For Microsoft, it represents an opportunity to further strengthen its technological image. Formula 1 has long been associated with innovation, real-time data processing, advanced simulations and extreme performance, all areas in which Microsoft has considerable expertise.
The impact on the world of Formula 1
The potential arrival of Microsoft as a top-tier sponsor reflects a broader trend within Formula 1. In recent years, the sport has attracted growing interest from major international groups, not only from the automotive sector but also from technology and digital services.
Formula 1 is no longer just a battleground between engines and drivers. It has become a true innovation laboratory, where technology and data play a central role. With its experience and know-how, Microsoft could help take Mercedes to an entirely new level, not only on track but also in terms of data optimisation, analysis and operational efficiency.
This move could also increase pressure on rival teams to secure similarly powerful financial partnerships in the coming seasons, as the competitive landscape of Formula 1 continues to evolve.
