At the start of 2024, Alpha Tauri rebranded as Racing Bulls, later abbreviated to RB. However, the identical initials have led to considerable confusion with its sister team, Red Bull, prompting the possibility of another shift.
During the Abu Dhabi weekend, CEO Peter Bayer revisited the naming issue. Racing Bulls is itself an abbreviation of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, due to sponsorship agreements. Many have opted to use the term Racing Bulls instead of VCARB, which refers specifically to the company without mentioning the title sponsor.
Alpha Tauri, VCARB, RB, and the confusion surrounding the name
“After a season, we can say that we’ve faced significant challenges in ensuring the team is identified correctly by its name,” Bayer explained.
“The press, across various countries, has consistently preferred to use different versions, which prevents the team from having a fixed identity. Ultimately, we see people referring to us as Visa Cash App Racing Bulls. Racing Bulls is still the name of our company. The only issue arises with the RB abbreviation, as some have mistaken it for Red Bull.”
“Our future goal is to ensure that everyone identifies us as VCARB and not with other names that cause confusion. Only then will we have a clearer identity, distinct from Red Bull. There should no longer be moments of confusion; it wouldn’t be fair,” added the CEO of the Italian team.
In short, it will be crucial for the Faenza-based team to adopt a single name starting next season. Perhaps this will also prevent other drivers from continuing to call it Alpha Tauri on the track, as often happened throughout 2024.
