F1 | Qatar Sprint: Russell secures second place after tough final laps
Despite finishing second, George Russell’s Qatar GP Sprint was far from easy. The Mercedes driver revealed that the final laps were particularly challenging for his tyres, even though he managed to hold position from the first corner all the way to the chequered flag. His performance confirmed the exceptional pace he showed in Friday’s qualifying, where he narrowly missed out on pole to Oscar Piastri.
Starting from the front row, Russell kept his place cleanly at the start and then ran a consistent race, but as he explained after the Sprint, the final laps tested him to the limit. “A good race finished in second place. The McLarens are very fast, but the last two laps were tough for me. This track is incredibly fast and one of the most enjoyable to drive, but it’s really brutal on the tyres and the cars. I’m just happy to have made it to the finish,” he said.
Going into the weekend, Mercedes was not expected to have an easy time. Lusail’s abundance of high-speed corners and the Qatar desert heat did not ideally suit the W16. Yet Russell delivered a remarkable performance in Friday qualifying, securing second place and slotting between the heavily favored McLarens.
After maintaining position at the start, George Russell drove the Brackley car steadily to the finish. Reflecting on the physical challenge, he added, “I tried to rest as much as possible. This track is really brutal. I don’t know the exact lateral G-forces, but I think they reach around 5G for an endless stretch, especially in that triple consecutive corner. It’s very demanding, but I enjoy this circuit and I’m glad to be driving here.”
With main qualifying just hours away, George Russell and Mercedes will be hoping the cooler evening conditions and a fresh set of tyres can help them challenge for pole position later tonight.
