Andrea Kimi Antonelli wrote a historic page in Formula 1 by winning the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix at just 19 years of age, starting from pole position and dominating the race all the way to the chequered flag. For Autosprint journalist Matteo Novembrini, the Bologna-born driver remains a raw diamond, but this first F1 victory could represent a decisive mental step in his career.
In Formula 1, Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his first win at only 19 years old, but what is truly surprising is not so much the victory itself, despite the young age of the Italian driver, but rather the manner in which the Mercedes driver achieved it — dominating from qualifying to the race at the Shanghai circuit. It is almost as if the 2006-born driver has made a “mental click” in recent times.
In fact, already towards the end of last Formula 1 season, Antonelli had shown clear signs of mental growth, consistently improving his on-track performances and gradually closing the gap to his team-mate George Russell. In short, all the conditions were there for a strong start to the 2026 championship, also thanks to a competitive W17.
However, Antonelli likely surprised first and foremost George Russell himself. After his victory in Australia, the British driver would have expected to win in China as well. But Antonelli, after a Sprint Race affected by a poor start and a penalty, responded with pole position and a race dominated from the first to the final corner. He showed himself to be a mature, fast and consistent driver, as if he had far more Grands Prix behind him than he actually does. In short, the fight for the world title risks becoming more complicated for Russell: with Antonelli rapidly improving, the challenge will first of all come from within the same garage.
Matteo Novembrini spoke about Kimi Antonelli’s extraordinary performance during an appearance on the Pit-Talk programme. The Autosprint journalist described Antonelli’s victory in China as outstanding, highlighting the Italian driver’s mental step forward.
“The victory was, in my opinion, outstanding. At least I — and what I believed — thought that Russell was the big favourite. Then maybe Russell did not have the ideal weekend: even with the Safety Car he was unlucky. But I am honest: when he got past the Ferraris, I expected George to at least start closing the gap. It’s true that he had pushed the tyres a bit more, but still he did not have the pace to catch him. And considering the huge difference in experience, in my opinion Antonelli sent a very strong signal in China.”
“It was really an excellent weekend for him. I am never one for extreme hype: in my opinion Andrea Kimi is still a raw diamond. But this is a big step. Many times, for a driver, the first victory represents exactly that — a step, almost a mental step. And I am very curious to see what happens next. In any case, it was a great victory and a great weekend.”
Following his first Formula 1 victory, Antonelli will certainly need to confirm his form at the next Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. Already in 2025, Kimi had impressed on the Suzuka circuit, and with a W17 performing at a high level, he undoubtedly has the potential to win again in the Land of the Rising Sun. The feeling, however, is that something inside the 2006-born driver has finally unlocked, although at the same time it will be important not to place too much pressure on him.
One thing is certain: George Russell will not need to look at other teams to find his main rival for the title — he may already have him in the same garage. Kimi is certainly not a driver who lets success go to his head; quite the opposite. Before being a racing driver, Kimi Antonelli is a humble, sensitive and hardworking young man who always keeps his feet on the ground. But the Kimi seen in China is a serious threat in sporting terms, given the way he dominated the Shanghai race. Russell has been warned: for now, the British driver remains the favourite for the title, but the biggest mistake he could make would be to underestimate his Italian team-mate.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s performance in Shanghai therefore suggests a shifting dynamic within the Mercedes team. As the 2026 season progresses, the mental evolution of this young talent could be the deciding factor in the fight for the World Championship, turning a promising debut into a legendary campaign.
