Oscar Piastri dominated the Qatar GP Sprint, leading from start to finish and managing his pace perfectly throughout the 19-lap race. George Russell finished second, nearly five seconds behind, while Lando Norris limited the damage by securing a podium. Max Verstappen could only manage fourth, continuing to show the same difficulties he faced in Sprint qualifying.
Piastri confirmed his mastery at Lusail, having won here in the previous two years. Starting from pole, the Australian faced no real threats and re-established himself as the top driver after a brief period of struggles, keeping his championship hopes alive. He gained two points on teammate Lando Norris and three on Max Verstappen.
The McLaren showcased clear superiority. Piastri steadily extended his gap over an excellent George Russell, who drove a very consistent race to bring the Mercedes home in second, nearly five seconds behind. George Russell skillfully managed Lando Norris’s pursuit, leaving the championship leader to settle for third. Norris gained a small point over Verstappen, increasing his championship lead to 25 points, just one more point needed to secure the world title.
Max Verstappen recovered to fourth after a strong start, despite continuing to struggle with the bouncing issues that affected him in Sprint qualifying. He benefitted from Yuki Tsunoda yielding his position without risking fifth place. Yuki Tsunoda had received a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, while Kimi Antonelli also received the same penalty but remained unthreatened in position.
On lap 13, Kimi Antonelli forced Fernando Alonso into a mistake, sending the Aston Martin wide, and overtook him at the end of the straight. Alonso finished seventh, just ahead of Carlos Sainz in eighth with Williams. The result helped the Silverstone team leapfrog Haas in the Constructors’ Championship by one point, reclaiming seventh place.
Ferrari, however, had a disastrous Sprint. Charles Leclerc struggled from a poor start, finishing 13th. He feared losing the car at turn 2 and never found a rhythm, ending behind the Haas of Ollie Bearman, a customer team car. Even worse, Lewis Hamilton broke parc fermé rules, like Lance Stroll and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, for setup changes, including switching to a lower-downforce rear wing. Hamilton complained over the radio that the car had actually worsened. Ferrari saw Mercedes pull further ahead in the Constructors’ standings, gaining ten points in the Sprint, while Red Bull also increased its lead by 21 points, ending Ferrari’s hopes of second in the championship.
Pierre Gasly, along with Colapinto and Stroll, pitted for soft tyres, and Gasly set the fastest lap in 1’23”188. A minor note in the overall race, but part of the story nonetheless.
