After the 2023 event, where many drivers struggled with the humidity and physical strain of the track, conditions this year are expected to be slightly different. Following the Las Vegas GP, held in notably cold conditions, the focus now shifts to the “heat” of the Middle East. Considered one of the most physically demanding GPs, Nico Hulkenberg’s coach has outlined how the drivers will face the Qatar challenges.
In 2023, the Qatar GP, held in early November, severely tested the endurance of the 20 drivers on the grid. Several opted to withdraw from the race to avoid fainting and creating additional risks for others. Some resorted to unconventional methods to cool down, such as George Russell, who extended a hand out of the cockpit on the straights to find some relief. Others, like Charles Leclerc, silently endured, reaching their limits as they let their heads rest against the head support.
With the race now scheduled for late November, the heat and reduced humidity should have a less overwhelming impact on the drivers. However, the track’s characteristics and the still-warm climate will ensure it remains a tough challenge.
“Qatar is one of the most physically demanding circuits,” explained Martin Poole, performance coach to Nico Hulkenberg. “The ambient temperature is very hot, as we saw last year, but since we’re returning a few weeks later, we’re hoping it’ll be a bit cooler. It will still be a significant physical challenge for the drivers; it’s always physical, but with the heat, it becomes much harder. Staying well-hydrated will be crucial, and we’ll use every cooling method at our disposal. For example, the traditional ice bath and chilled towels. We’ll also ensure the drivers drink plenty of cool beverages and stay out of the heat whenever possible.”
“Transitioning from Las Vegas to Qatar will be tough—there’s no easy way to do it. We’ll do our best to prioritize good sleep as soon as we arrive in Qatar. Nico is pretty good at sleeping well and finding time to rest during the day if needed, so I’m confident we’ll manage.”
