Pierre Gasly has defended Alpine’s bold decision to stop developing its current Formula 1 car very early in the season. The French driver said that the 2025 campaign is no longer a priority, especially with the 2026 regulatory revolution fast approaching.
For Alpine, 2026 will mark a major shift as the team switches to Mercedes power units, ending its role as a full constructor under the new rules. On top of that, the Enstone-based outfit halted development of the A525 early in 2025, forcing Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto to battle at the back of the grid in many races.
In the standings, Pierre Gasly has scored only 22 points across twenty-one races—Alpine’s only points this season—as the team sits last in the constructors’ championship. Despite the poor results, the Frenchman has defended the team’s choice to channel every resource into the 2026 project, emphasising that the decision will make sense if Alpine can provide him with a competitive car next year.
When asked whether he would have preferred Alpine to continue improving the current car, Pierre Gasly replied: “If this can give me better results next year, I literally don’t care at all about this season, it will be worth it. Because the reality is that what we could have fought for this year is still not enough for us.”
He continued: “And these few weeks or months can potentially give us an advantage over other teams and lead to much greater success, which is what we ultimately want. So yes, I fully support the team’s decision. It’s a bit drastic, but sometimes, to achieve greatness, you need to make difficult decisions.”
