Zero points in the current season yet a confirmed contract for the next year. Paradoxical? Perhaps, but this is the story of a young, talented driver with a fanbase that rivals established champions: Franco Colapinto. The 22-year-old Argentine has his entire career ahead to fulfill the promise he has shown, even though he has spent this season behind the wheel of an Alpine struggling at the very bottom of the field, not only in qualifying but also in the Constructors’ Championship.
Another challenging aspect of this difficult season for the French team is the performance gap compared to his main teammate: Pierre Gasly has already scored 22 points in the Drivers’ Championship. Pierre Gasly, also recently extended with Alpine until 2028, has been a key benchmark for Colapinto in his first full F1 season.
Expectations are high for the new 2026 technical regulations that will impact the entire paddock. Alpine hopes to see at least an improved on-track performance compared to the current season, while the rest remains to be seen as all teams prepare for a new era of motorsport.
Colapinto’s impressive following despite difficulties
Franco Colapinto’s talent and his strong fanbase were highlighted by Williams team principal James Vowles, who has known the driver since his time in the Williams Driver Academy. Colapinto made his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 2024, replacing Logan Sargeant.
James Vowles commented: “Franco is a young driver and despite the difficulties of this season, he has earned his confirmation for next year. I am very proud of the progress he made before his F1 debut, as well as what he is continuing to achieve now at the wheel of the A525.”
The former Mercedes engineer continued: “Over the last seven races, he has made significant strides. Even though he has yet to score points, he is showing his talent and emulating the strong performances we saw in Williams. He is proving to everyone that he is fast.”
Undeniably, Franco Colapinto benefits from a highly supportive fanbase, even compared to more established drivers. James Vowles added: “He is followed by a huge number of fans, especially from his home country of Argentina. His following is massive, which is an advantage for him and also for the sport, which thrives on passion and supporters.”
On the future of the Argentine driver, James Vowles has no doubts: “Motorsport is healthy right now, and so is Franco. I am confident that this young man will have a bright future,” concluded James Vowles.
