Heartbreak for Pierre Gasly in Monaco: Celebrates P3 on cool-down lap unaware of penalties. Pierre Gasly celebrated a Monaco podium he never actually had.

Pierre Gasly, Alpine A526, 2026 F1

The chaotic Monaco Grand Prix produced no shortage of drama, but few moments were as heartbreaking as Pierre Gasly’s post-race celebration. The Alpine driver crossed the finish line in third place and spent the entire cooldown lap believing he had secured a podium finish, unaware that penalties had already cost him a spot in the top three.

Pierre Gasly’s Monaco dream turns into a nightmare

Among the many twists and surprises of the Monaco Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly experienced perhaps the most emotional rollercoaster of all. The French driver took the chequered flag in third position after a strong race through the streets of Monte Carlo, only to discover later that he would not be standing on the podium after all. Pierre Gasly was eventually classified seventh after receiving two separate five-second penalties for exceeding the pit-lane speed limit on two occasions during the race.

After crossing the finish line, Pierre Gasly was convinced he had secured a podium finish for Alpine. “P3, P3!” he shouted over team radio, celebrating what he believed was one of the team’s biggest results in recent years. The Frenchman then spent the entire cooldown lap visibly delighted, repeatedly punching the air and soaking in what he thought was a return to the Formula 1 podium.

What made the situation even more surprising was that his race engineer had apparently not informed him about the two five-second penalties already applied to his race time. As a result, Pierre Gasly remained completely unaware that his podium finish was under threat and that he would eventually lose his place in the top three once the final classification was confirmed.

The video that broke Formula 1 fans’ hearts

Images and videos of Pierre Gasly’s celebration quickly spread across social media after the race. Fans watched as the Alpine driver celebrated throughout the cooldown lap, completely unaware that the final standings would tell a very different story. The footage immediately became one of the most discussed moments of the Monaco weekend.

Many supporters expressed sympathy for Pierre Gasly, while others questioned why the penalties had not been clearly communicated before the race ended. The emotional contrast between his joy and the reality of the final classification made the incident particularly painful to watch, turning what should have been a triumphant moment into one of the most bittersweet stories of the season.

Alpine seeks a review of the penalties

The story may not be over yet. Alpine has decided to exercise its right to request a review of the penalties, arguing that the sanctions were unjustified and should be reconsidered by the stewards. The French team believes there are grounds to challenge the decisions that ultimately removed Pierre Gasly from the podium positions.

If the review is successful, Alpine could potentially regain the result that appeared to be theirs when the chequered flag fell. Such an outcome would mark a significant achievement for the Enstone-based team, whose most recent podium finish came at the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix when Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon both finished inside the top three alongside Max Verstappen.

For now, however, Pierre Gasly’s Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the most emotional stories of the 2026 Formula 1 season. What initially seemed like a dream result ended in disappointment, transforming a moment of celebration into a painful reminder that in Formula 1, the final result is only confirmed once every penalty and steward decision has been taken into account.
