The 2026 Formula 1 season is rapidly approaching, and with the introduction of new technical regulations, drivers are expected to play a decisive role on track. From race performance to team strategies, and even the engineers’ contributions, the influence of the driver will be more critical than ever. For fans, this promises a season full of unpredictability and thrilling racing.
According to Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s current driver, the upcoming season will introduce several new challenges, including energy management, driving techniques, and real-time decision-making by the drivers themselves. Speaking to FOX Sports, Oscar Piastri explained: “There will be many things we’ll need to get used to as drivers, especially managing battery power and executing actions in-race that we’ve never had to deal with before.”
What changes in the 2026 F1 season: technical revolution and the role of drivers
The 2026 regulations will completely overhaul the power units, introducing a much clearer division between combustion engine and electric power. The electric component will gain significantly more importance, making in-race energy management a key factor. Drivers will need to master switching between power modes, battery regeneration under braking, and strategic use of electric power at every Grand Prix.
Other changes include advanced aerodynamics and variable configuration systems that aim to improve overtaking opportunities. The traditional DRS will be replaced by two new modes: Boost Mode and Overtake Mode, requiring more thoughtful use by the drivers during races.
Lighter cars, better handling, and more driver influence
The 2026 cars will be lighter, shorter, and feature a different weight distribution, with a lower minimum weight compared to recent models. These technical changes will make the cars more responsive, emphasizing driver skill—especially in mid-speed corners and direction changes. The result is a higher direct impact of driving ability on car behavior.
Driver talent takes center stage
With these new regulations, the 2026 season will put individual driver talent at the forefront. Successfully interpreting the new cars, managing strategies, optimizing aerodynamic settings, and controlling energy usage will be the difference between winning a race and falling behind. These changes could also reduce the absolute technological advantages of certain teams, making raw driving skill more important than ever.
