Gianpiero Lambiase set to leave Red Bull and join McLaren in major 2028 F1 reshuffle
Following a surprise announcement, it was confirmed that Gianpiero Lambiase will leave Red Bull Racing at the end of the current cycle in 2028. Just minutes later, his next destination was also revealed, marking one of the most notable internal moves in recent Formula 1 personnel changes.
The experienced Italian engineer will move from Milton Keynes to Woking, officially joining McLaren starting in 2028. The move represents a significant addition to McLaren’s technical and sporting structure as the team continues to strengthen its long-term championship ambitions in Formula 1.
After the initial announcement, however, few details were provided regarding his exact responsibilities within the organisation. McLaren has now clarified the position that Gianpiero Lambiase will hold within the team framework, offering a clearer picture of his future role.
“McLaren Racing is pleased to announce that Gianpiero Lambiase will join the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team as Chief Racing Officer, reporting to Team Principal Andrea Stella,” reads the official statement from the reigning World Championship-winning team.
“The Chief Racing Officer role already exists within the team structure and is responsible for the overall leadership of the race team. These responsibilities are currently handled by Andrea Stella in addition to his duties as Team Principal.”
McLaren further emphasized that Gianpiero Lambiase represents a continuation of the team’s long-term strategy to build and maintain a high-performance organisation capable of competing at the very top of Formula 1.
“Lambiase is the latest addition aimed at strengthening and supporting the talent pool within McLaren Mastercard, while reaffirming the team’s long-term commitment to consolidating its position as a winning organisation,” the statement continued.
“The team’s ability to attract and secure top-level talent such as Lambiase, as well as previous appointments including Rob Marshall and Will Courtenay, alongside the retention and promotion of highly skilled individuals already within the organisation, is a testament to the strategic vision and culture embedded within the McLaren Mastercard F1 Team under the leadership of Zak Brown and Andrea Stella, both of whom are committed to long-term contracts.”
This latest move highlights McLaren’s continued effort to reinforce its leadership structure both on and off the track, ensuring stability as Formula 1 prepares for the next regulatory era and increasingly competitive seasons ahead.
