Oscar Piastri is eagerly anticipating the 2026 Formula 1 season, a year set to bring one of the most significant regulatory overhauls in decades. With major changes on the horizon, the Australian believes that the driver’s role will be more crucial than ever.
F1 on the brink of a revolution
The new regulations will increase the importance of the electric component of the power unit, introduce radical braking changes, reintroduce active aerodynamics, and present drivers with a host of new concepts to master. Formula 1 is about to undergo the most important rule shake-up in decades, possibly one of the largest ever. Predicting the outcome is currently impossible, as even the teams are working in the dark, focusing solely on their development while hoping no one else has made a better breakthrough.
Drivers are currently relying on simulators to understand the changes. Like with any innovation, there was initial skepticism, but anticipation is now building as everyone looks forward to the first closed-door tests at Montmeló at the end of January. For Oscar Piastri, amid all this uncertainty, the role of the driver will once again become central.
Oscar Piastri’s perspective
“Of course, there will be differences: the engines will be very different, with much more electric power than combustion, and there will be many aspects we drivers will have to get used to, like managing battery power. But it will still be an F1 car, and as drivers, there will be many areas where we can make a difference. I think for the fans, it will be very exciting,” Oscar Piastri told Fox Sports.
“With the new rules, you never know who will succeed and who won’t. So we hope to be among those who make it.”
Oscar Piastri also reflected on his 2025 season, which saw him dominate for much of the year before a late drop in form compromised his championship chances: “It was an intense season, and I’m incredibly proud of what the team and I were able to achieve. Of course, towards the end of the season there were some obstacles, but I learned a lot and I’m proud of what we accomplished.”
As the sport moves toward this unknown territory, Oscar Piastri’s confidence suggests that McLaren is preparing to meet the new technical demands head-on. With the balance of power likely to shift across the grid, the ability to adapt to complex energy recovery systems and active aero adjustments will separate the elite from the rest. For a driver known for his analytical approach and composure, the 2026 “driver-centric” regulations could play perfectly into Oscar Piastri’s hands.
