Haas stronger with Toyota
Since taking command of the pit wall, team principal Ayao Komatsu has led Haas to steady growth. In terms of Constructors’ Championship position, the American team has slipped slightly (from seventh to eighth over the course of a year), but looking at the points earned, the recently concluded season was the second-best of the decade in Formula 1.
The team is developing both on and off the track. The partnership with Toyota brings stability to Gene Haas’s project and will allow Haas to advance technically, structurally, and financially. However, it will not affect driver lineups: while Toyota dreams of winning with one of “their” drivers (they have a large pool of talent competing across various championships), performance remains the priority.
Ayao Komatsu’s words
“Certainly, Toyota has raised the possibility of running a full-time Formula 1 driver, which is one of their objectives,” said Ayao Komatsu. “But the main point is that performance comes first.”
“Anyone who gets into our race car must be the best choice in terms of performance. We all agree on this, including Akio (Toyoda, Toyota president). Even if he wanted a Japanese driver from his academy, it would be ridiculous to field them if they weren’t good enough.”
The synergy between Haas and Toyota therefore appears to be built on mutual respect for the sporting challenges of Formula 1. By prioritizing performance over politics, the partnership aims to avoid the pitfalls of “pay drivers” or forced marketing hires, ensuring that every development—from the wind tunnel to the driver’s seat—is directed solely toward making the VF-26 and its successors faster on Sunday afternoon.
