The ten-second time penalty given to Oscar Piastri at the 2025 British Grand Prix cost the Australian driver his first potential Formula 1 victory at Silverstone. The race stewards penalized him for what they deemed a dangerous deceleration behind the Safety Car, measuring an abrupt drop in speed of no less than 166 km/h—a moment the McLaren driver chose not to comment on in detail. Meanwhile, his teammate Lando Norris enjoyed a highly emotional and long-awaited home victory.
The British Grand Prix at Silverstone ended with a one-two finish for the McLaren Formula 1 Team, but it was a bittersweet result. The race was won by Lando Norris, with Oscar Piastri finishing just behind—but only on track. The ten-second penalty handed to the Australian meant that the final result did not reflect the close battle between the two teammates.
This home race for the Woking-based team was far from straightforward, heavily influenced by unpredictable weather conditions that swung between rain, dry spells, and damp patches on the track. Despite the challenges, the McLaren pit wall—under the leadership of team principal Andrea Stella—executed a flawless strategy. The performance of both drivers was dominant, leaving rivals behind in challenging circumstances.
However, the turning point of the race came when Oscar Piastri received a ten-second time penalty during one of the several Safety Car periods that characterized the British Grand Prix. The Australian driver was judged to have braked too hard behind the Safety Car, performing what stewards considered a dangerous maneuver. According to the official FIA report, telemetry showed Piastri applied 59.2 PSI of brake pressure between turns 14 and 15, slowing from 218 km/h to 52 km/h—a sharp deceleration of 166 km/h.
Up to that moment, Oscar Piastri had been leading the race, with teammate Lando Norris close behind. Once Piastri served the penalty—accompanied by the deduction of two penalty points from his super license—Norris inherited the race lead and held onto it without taking unnecessary risks, securing a crucial win in front of his home crowd.
“It’s better if I don’t say too much, otherwise I’ll get into trouble. But I do want to congratulate Nico, I think that’s the best news of the day,” commented Oscar Piastri with visible restraint after stepping out of his McLaren in parc fermé, referring to Nico Hülkenberg’s achievement of his first-ever Formula 1 podium.
“It seems like you’re not allowed to brake behind the Safety Car anymore. I mean, I had already done that for five laps before that point. But again, I won’t say much more—I’d only end up in trouble,” he added.
The Australian also thanked the fans who braved the bad weather: “Thank you to the crowd for coming out to this great event and sticking with it through the rain. I always enjoy Silverstone—even if today, maybe a bit less.”
For his part, Lando Norris celebrated what was a highly emotional and significant victory, both personally and professionally, as he strengthens his standing in the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship.
“It’s amazing—something I’ve always dreamed of achieving. Apart from winning a world title, I think this is the best it gets in terms of emotions, results, and pride. This is where everything started for me; and now, thankfully, I finally got my chance,” said the British driver.
“It was an incredible race—stressful, like always. But the support from the fans made all the difference today. I really have to thank them for that. Before the race, you try to clear your mind and not do anything stupid, but in the final laps, I couldn’t help but look at the crowd. I was trying to take it all in, to enjoy the moment—because it might never happen again.”
“Of course, I hope it will happen again. But these are memories I’ll carry with me forever. It might have been the most stressful race we’ve ever had. And it was great for Oscar too—he was fast all weekend. Credit to him as well, because he fought hard and I enjoy these moments on track with him.”
“Not so much when he’s in front of me, but definitely when he’s behind me,” Norris joked. “But that’s how things go sometimes, and he deserves recognition—as does the entire McLaren team. Winning at home, in front of all our friends and family who came here—it’s truly extraordinary. So a massive thank you to them as well.”
