Piastri and Norris react to their contact: is tension rising at McLaren?
With the Constructors’ Championship practically secured and six races still remaining in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the atmosphere inside McLaren is beginning to heat up. Between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the battle looks set to become increasingly intense — and today we got a small preview of that rivalry, following a minor clash at Turn 3 right after the Singapore Grand Prix race start.
The British driver had found an opening on the inside but came across Max Verstappen in front of him. To avoid contact, Norris hit the brakes and made a quick correction, which pushed his teammate slightly wide — almost into the wall.
“My intention wasn’t to cause an incident with Oscar. There was a lot of space on the inside and I was looking for an opportunity there, but then I found Max in front of me. The track was still a bit damp, and I lost control for a moment,” Norris explained to the media after the race.
The Australian’s response wasn’t long in coming, though his tone was far calmer than what fans might have expected after the heated on-track moment. With the adrenaline fading — and likely some influence from McLaren’s communications team — Piastri’s words were measured and composed.
“I still need to review the footage; I only have my view from inside the cockpit. It was a tough race today, but what matters most is that we brought home the title. This is the culmination of a journey that started years ago, rewarding all the hard work done by everyone in Woking, and I’m proud to be part of it. As for the incident, I’m sure Lando didn’t do it on purpose,” Piastri stated.
Despite the brief tension, both drivers appeared to downplay the situation afterward. Yet with both McLaren drivers fighting at the front and only a few races left, the internal rivalry could become one of the most intriguing storylines as the 2025 season heads toward its conclusion.
