Alpine and Mercedes have reached an agreement for the supply of Power Units. After months of rumors and negotiations, the two teams have decided to join forces, following the closure of the Power Unit program at Viry Chatillon.
Starting from the 2026 Formula 1 season, the BWT Alpine F1 team will use Mercedes engines and gearboxes thanks to an important partnership agreement with Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains and Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix. This agreement, which will last at least until 2030, marks a significant shift for Alpine, which has previously used Renault engines.
This new alliance is in line with the upcoming regulatory changes in Formula 1 and aims to position Alpine competitively in the 2026 era. Although the partnership will take effect with the new regulations, Alpine remains committed to maximizing its performance in the 2024 and 2025 F1 seasons, continuing with the current configuration to finish this period on a high note.
This move could add an extra layer of competition on track, with Alpine aiming to improve its performance by using the proven Mercedes engines and gearboxes, potentially enhancing reliability and competitiveness in an increasingly competitive environment.
With this official announcement, one of the darker chapters in Alpine’s history comes to a close, as the team will no longer be a full-fledged constructor in F1. In fact, with the closure of the Power Unit department, the Enstone team will only produce its chassis and aerodynamics, losing its status as a Constructor. This marks a new chapter in Alpine’s history, as the team looks to bounce back in an increasingly thrilling F1 championship.
