Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has issued a warning to George Russell regarding the challenges of negotiating a new contract with Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff. According to Rosberg, who won the 2016 World Championship title with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Wolff is known for his “horrible” negotiation tactics—a characteristic that Rosberg believes Russell should be mindful of.
At present, George Russell finds himself in a similar situation to the one Rosberg experienced years ago, with his future at Mercedes under discussion. Although Mercedes is widely expected to confirm its driver line-up for the 2026 Formula 1 season in the coming weeks, with George Russell likely to continue racing alongside the young Italian prospect Andrea Kimi Antonelli, no official announcement has yet been made.
During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Nico Rosberg, who was on-site as a pundit for Sky Sports F1, reflected on his own past experiences dealing with contract negotiations involving Toto Wolff.
“Negotiating with Toto is horrible because his tactic is to vanish,” said Rosberg, offering a glimpse into the management style of the Mercedes team boss. “So, when you try to reach out to him—just like George is likely trying to do right now—he’ll stall. And then he’ll disappear. George might be texting Toto, trying to move things along or get some clarity, and Toto just goes silent,” he added.
Despite these anecdotes, George Russell has publicly expressed confidence in his future with the Brackley-based team and has stated that he has no major concerns regarding the upcoming contract renewal.
Nico Rosberg, while acknowledging that he was speaking hypothetically, continued by describing how frustrating the process can be. “Anyway, this is not a fact; I’m just making it up,” Rosberg clarified with a smile. “But I remember that in my time, that was exactly how it went. He would disappear, stop responding, become unreachable… and it’s a terrible feeling because you’re just left waiting. You have no clarity, no control over your own destiny. You’re basically stuck until you find a way to bump into him by chance.”
The situation adds a layer of uncertainty to George Russell’s immediate future, even if a renewal with Mercedes seems the most logical outcome. Russell, who has consistently delivered solid performances and shown loyalty to the team, is expected to remain a central part of Mercedes’ long-term project, particularly as the team prepares for the significant regulation changes arriving in 2026.
Russell is not the only high-profile driver currently weighing his options. Four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen is also taking his time before making a final decision regarding his future with Oracle Red Bull Racing. While a departure from Red Bull appears highly unlikely at this stage, an official statement regarding Verstappen’s intentions is expected in the near future. According to various sources in the paddock, such an announcement might even arrive during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend.
In the fast-paced world of Formula 1, where contracts and politics play as much of a role as performance on the track, Russell’s and Max Verstappen‘s decisions will be closely watched by fans, teams, and the media alike. Whether or not Toto Wolff’s elusive negotiation style will influence Russell’s timeline remains to be seen—but Nico Rosberg’s candid warning has certainly sparked conversation in the paddock.
