F1 | Mercedes Chief Technical Officer admits “serious mistake” that is hurting Kimi Antonelli. James Allison revealed that a major development error is behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s recent struggles.

Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes, 2025 F1

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently facing a difficult period in his debut Formula 1 season, and according to James Allison, the Chief Technical Officer of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, the blame lies not with the young Italian driver but with a serious error made by the team itself. The revelation comes after a series of disappointing results for Antonelli following his breakthrough podium finish in Canada at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

Since that impressive performance in Montreal, which was expected to mark the beginning of Antonelli’s consistent rise in the premier class of motorsport, the 17-year-old driver has not scored any additional points. Following another challenging weekend at the demanding Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium, Antonelli appeared visibly disheartened and discouraged. However, according to Allison, the underlying issue stems from the technical direction taken by Mercedes, which has affected both of its drivers.

What was meant to be a turning point in Antonelli’s career—a podium finish confirming his raw but undeniable talent—has instead been followed by a string of underwhelming performances and race retirements. The downturn has led to growing skepticism within the paddock about his readiness for Formula 1, despite the early signs of promise. Both Andrea Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes team are now experiencing a rough patch, as the Silver Arrows find themselves only the fourth-fastest team on the grid, trailing behind McLaren, Red Bull Racing, and Scuderia Ferrari.

Mercedes’ struggles are not limited to Antonelli alone. George Russell, the more experienced teammate, has also suffered from the team’s missteps. Since the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell has only managed to collect a tenth-place finish at Silverstone and two fifth-place results in Austria and Belgium. These outcomes highlight a broader technical issue that is impacting the entire team.

At the Mercedes headquarters in Brackley, the engineers and leadership are now grappling with the looming 2026 technical regulation overhaul, which will bring significant changes to the design philosophy and power unit configurations across the grid. With next season’s driver line-up already confirmed, there is internal debate about whether to shift development focus to the 2026 car. However, doing so too soon could mean sacrificing the competitiveness of the current W16 car in the remaining races of the 2025 season.

In the midst of this uncertain landscape, James Allison has stepped in to shield Antonelli from criticism. The technical director made it clear that the young Italian is not to blame for the recent downturn in performance. “I believe he is, like all of us, extremely frustrated by the string of results that fall well below what we were collectively achieving earlier in the season,” said Allison, as reported by RacingNews365.

Allison went on to explain that Mercedes has acknowledged its share of responsibility: “I hope he finds some comfort in the fact that we’re telling him—and this is demonstrably true—that we’ve made the wrong technical decisions with the car, which have made the team less competitive. As a result, he is suffering the consequences of those decisions, just like George is. If the car isn’t where it needs to be performance-wise, then it becomes especially difficult to navigate qualifying sessions during your rookie season in Formula 1.”

The British engineer emphasized that the path forward is clear for the team: “It’s absolutely evident to all of us that the priority must be to improve the car’s performance. Once we do that, Kimi’s results will improve as well.” He concluded with a message of support for the young talent: “We sincerely hope he is listening when we offer these reassuring words, because we know for certain that he is doing his part with tremendous dedication and effort.”

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, still only in his first season at the pinnacle of single-seater racing, is regarded as one of the most promising drivers of his generation. Mercedes’ internal support and James Allison’s public defense are strong signals that the team remains committed to helping Antonelli grow, adapt, and ultimately thrive at the highest level of motorsport.
