The contact between Oscar Piastri and George Russell during FP2 at the Dutch Grand Prix was reviewed by the stewards. Here is the outcome of the investigation.
A rare FP2 incident between Mercedes and McLaren
In a rare occurrence, Mercedes driver George Russell and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri were involved in a minor collision. Piastri was returning to the pits but hesitated and re-entered the fast lane, colliding with Russell and prompting an investigation at the end of the second free practice session in the Netherlands. The stewards reviewed the incident and have now issued a decision regarding the championship leader.
The investigation outcome and incident details
The stewards analyzed the FP2 incident between Oscar Piastri and George Russell and issued a $5,000 reprimand to the McLaren team. The FIA listened to McLaren’s account and reviewed the footage and team radio communications before reaching the decision. The team admitted that it could have handled the situation better by warning their driver of Russell’s presence behind him.
There is precedent for penalties during free practice sessions, such as the Stroll-Leclerc incident in Monaco, where the Canadian forced the Ferrari driver against the wall. In this case, however, no further action was taken, with the stewards judging Oscar Piastri’s move to be within acceptable limits.
What happened on track
During the incident, Russell was reportedly very surprised by his rival’s actions, which followed instructions from his team. Piastri was heading to the pits due to a red flag but initially aimed for the space allocated to his teammate. To avoid Lando Norris’ mechanics and correctly position himself in the following pit box, Piastri moved back into the fast lane. At that moment, Russell arrived and was abruptly struck by the McLaren #81.
