The Yas Marina victory
Back in 2016, Nico Rosberg became Formula 1 world champion at the season finale in Abu Dhabi, concluding an intense intra-team battle with his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. That triumph ended Hamilton’s dominance, which had begun in 2014, and secured Rosberg a place in the F1 history books, following in the footsteps of his father Keke Rosberg, who won the championship in 1982. The Rosbergs became only the second father-son duo to both claim the title, after Graham and Damon Hill.
The shocking retirement: why?
Remarkably, just a week after his victory, Nico Rosberg announced his immediate retirement from Formula 1 and competitive racing altogether. The decision stunned the motorsport world and is still regarded as one of the most unexpected exits in F1 history. Nine years later, Nico Rosberg revisited the choice during an interview with Sky F1, explaining his motivations. He told former F1 driver Martin Brundle that he had already made up his mind at the start/finish line. He felt he was at the peak of his career and wanted to leave at that high point, describing the moment as a beautiful conclusion to a long and successful journey. While he acknowledged that many fans were disappointed, he emphasized that the decision was the right one personally, even after such a spectacular season-long battle.
Not like Lando Norris
Turning his attention to the present, Nico Rosberg shared his thoughts on the recently crowned world champion Lando Norris, who also clinched his first title in Abu Dhabi. Nico Rosberg expressed confidence that Norris will continue his Formula 1 career for many years, unlike his own retirement decision in 2016. He noted that Norris, being younger, is likely to look forward to several more exciting seasons and is not contemplating an early exit. Nico Rosberg stressed that every driver makes such life and career decisions in their own way, highlighting the contrast between his retirement at the top and Norris’ long-term ambitions in the sport.
As the grid prepares for the massive technical changes coming in 2026, it seems certain that the reigning champion will be there to defend his crown. Unlike Nico Rosberg, who felt his mission was complete after defeating his greatest rival, Lando Norris appears hungry to build a legacy that extends far beyond a single trophy. With McLaren’s current momentum and the 2026 regulations approaching, the “Norris era” may only just be beginning.
