Lando Norris is facing severe criticism following the disastrous incident during the Canadian Grand Prix: what is happening to the English driver?
If the situation was already difficult, it has clearly worsened after yesterday’s events. In the final laps of the Canadian GP, we witnessed what many expected sooner or later: the crash between the two McLarens, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Unfortunately, it was number 4 who suffered the most, now coming under attack from numerous insiders who do not hold back their criticism.
Lando Norris’s seventh season in Formula 1 has neither started well nor continued positively. What everyone expected from him after the end of 2024 has not materialized. Constantly trailing behind teammate Oscar Piastri, he keeps making the same, sometimes foolish, rookie mistakes, behaving like a driver who often seems lost despite the car he drives.
This year, the only two real occasions where Norris made a difference were the opening race in Melbourne and the Monaco Grand Prix. In the other eight races, his performance has been very inconsistent, swinging between strong drives and complete disasters. The latest disaster was the one in Canada where, trying to overtake Oscar Piastri, he nearly caused a McLaren knockout.
Because of this, many criticisms are starting to pour in against the English driver, such as that from Martin Brundle on Sky Sports F1. “It was a ‘clumsy’ and unnecessary move. Probably Lando thought he could pass him on the straight, having come out better from the last chicane, but Oscar wasn’t kind to him… why should he have been?”
“Lando insisted on the left side of the track even though there was no more space,” the former driver continued. “He alternates weekends where he dominates completely with others where he collapses. In the race, he drove very well, recovering positions after a poor Saturday qualifying: he pushed when necessary and caught up with Piastri.”
“But then what we all know happened. Lando Norris will never win a world championship until he eliminates these difficult weekends: he has to always give his best, like Verstappen does. At the moment, he is not out of the title fight at all, but considering where he was in Melbourne, he has lost a lot.”
