The miniseries *Senna* premieres on Netflix on November 29, featuring all six episodes. Following *Formula 1: Drive to Survive*, the streaming platform continues to draw F1 enthusiasts with this new production.
*Senna* aims to tell the origin story of the three-time Brazilian world champion, leading up to his tragic death at the San Marino Grand Prix on May 1, 1994.
Kaya Scodelario is among the actors in the Netflix miniseries, which was filmed last year in São Paulo. She plays a fictional journalist, half English and half Brazilian, who forms a bond of respect and friendship with Ayrton.
Scodelario had “always heard stories” about the Brazilian driver but only understood his significance after watching Asif Kapadia’s 2010 documentary, also available on Netflix. “That cinema was packed with Brazilians. They were crying and shouting at every scene featuring Prost. It was the most emotional and passionate cinema experience of my life.”
For her role in Netflix’s *Senna*, Scodelario, who is British but of Brazilian descent, spoke in Portuguese and later dubbed the character in English. “I spent years asking my agents to find me a project in Brazil. It was really important for me to show the world that this is part of my culture. Once, an article described me as an English rose, and it really p***ed me off. Because I’m not.”
Then the opportunity with *Senna* came along. “I jumped at it. I’ll do anything, I’ll do it for free, I told myself. I’ll improve my Portuguese to speak it perfectly.” The experience on set was “the most exhausting I’ve ever had.” Even though it wasn’t a physical role, “I tried to be mindful of every sound I made with my mouth, to ensure my accent was correct. I was terrified.”
