A Rocky Start
In seven days, Formula 1 will be in Melbourne for the first GP of the 2025 season, a highly anticipated event after the major changes that affected many teams during the winter. In these days, various television pundits who hold the broadcasting rights are traveling from Europe to the other side of the world to cover the first race of the World Championship live. However, for 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, his first trip of the year — to the track where he made his F1 debut in 1996 — started off quite unfortunately.
As the Canadian champion himself described on his Instagram profile — with a mix of humor and disbelief — his Australian trip began in the…bathrooms of Malpensa. The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu native was stuck in the airport bathroom for over half an hour without being able to free himself. This unusual situation had to be solved by the former driver of Williams, BAR, Sauber, and Renault on his own, as the help from airport security proved ineffective.
Problem Solved in a… Rough Manner
Through social media, Jacques Villeneuve made light of the situation without getting too discouraged: “I’ve been stuck in the bathroom for 20 minutes, and security still hasn’t managed to get me out,” the Canadian wrote, ‘attaching’ a selfie in which his expression says it all. “The flush goes off every 30 seconds. I’m having a blast. Really impressive. A great start to the trip to Australia.”
Shortly after, came the second ‘update,’ where the World Champion and Indy500 winner explained that he finally found a rather…rough way to escape: “I had to kick down the door, and a ceiling block fell on my head,” he added. Not exactly the best way to start a long trip for the 53-year-old, who this year is also an ‘ambassador’ for the Williams team.
