McLaren has prepared two rear wing options for the Abu Dhabi GP, a race that could see the team return to the Constructors’ Championship battle. The Yas Marina Circuit is now classified as medium downforce following its 2021 modifications, which removed one of the more winding sections.
In Friday’s first free practice session, the two drivers will test entirely different setups on their MCL38s. Lando Norris will use a main wing profile with a highly elevated leading edge and a pronounced spoon shape only in the central portion to reduce drag. The movable flap, however, is designed for maximum downforce, with a long, curved chord and a nolder running along the entire trailing edge. The two lateral flap supports are squared off to maximize downforce, and a rib is visible on the endplate to generate additional localized load.
Oscar Piastri’s rear wing configuration, on the other hand, is notably different. The Australian’s car features a more downforce-oriented main profile with a leading edge that is curved only near the endplates, maintaining a more pronounced spoon shape. Meanwhile, the movable flap is less aggressive, incorporating a V-shaped central section. The two lateral supports are smoothed to favor higher speeds at the speed trap.
The papaya team will compare the data to determine the most suitable configuration for the Abu Dhabi track. Team principal Andrea Stella is ensuring all options are available, especially if the weekend turns out to be cooler than forecast, as was the case in Qatar.
