McLaren arrived at the Australian Grand Prix as the favorite, fresh off a Constructors’ Championship win and strong pre-season testing in Bahrain. The team lived up to expectations in the early track sessions—though not without some tense moments in the garage—securing a front-row lockout for the race and leaving none other than Max Verstappen three-tenths behind. However, with heavy rain expected, the race could still shake things up.
Team principal Andrea Stella remains cautious, convinced that their rivals have yet to show their true pace: “Both drivers did an excellent job. This result is the product of the hard work of all the men and women in Woking who have pushed to make the car even stronger. There were some tense moments, especially at the start of Q3, but Lando and Oscar maximized their performance. I believe some teams could be faster than what today’s gaps suggest. Tomorrow’s weather forecast points to a chaotic race, and we need to be prepared for multiple scenarios.” – the former Ferrari race engineer concluded.
