Learning from one’s mistakes is a fundamental virtue for growth and aiming high: McLaren has done that, and Lando Norris enjoys a well-deserved triumph in the chaotic Australian GP, the opening round of the F1 World Championship. The British driver, starting from pole, navigated the chaotic 57 laps of the race, overcoming various challenges, and took home the first victory of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Only rain could have complicated the life of a brilliant and sharp McLaren in Melbourne. And so it was. After an undisputed qualifying session and a dominant first stint, incidents due to sudden and complicated weather conditions reshuffled the cards at Albert Park. Safety Car, downpours, and errors turned the race into a survival contest, but none of that could affect the triumph of the British driver born in 1999.
Lando Norris enjoys the victory in Australia, which inevitably places him at the top of the standings. “It was amazing, but complicated.” The McLaren driver found the word “stressful” to be the most suitable to describe the Melbourne race.
It was stressful to limit mistakes, stressful to manage Verstappen’s attack in the final laps. “Having Max behind me was pretty stressful, especially in the last laps. It was complicated, we went off track, made some mistakes, and had some damage. The conditions were really critical, but this time we managed to finish in front of everyone.”
Last year, McLaren had made some mistakes in races with conditions similar to the Australian GP. While the 2024 races hadn’t been favorable to McLaren, the same cannot be said about the Melbourne GP. “We learned from our past mistakes.” Lando Norris enjoys the victory and takes some credit: “I think I did pretty well not to make too many mistakes that could have cost me dearly.”
However, Lando Norris’ final thanks go to the team. The work of Andrea Stella‘s team at Woking has created a car that, after the first weekend, already looks unbeatable. “It was a complicated and challenging race, but I have to thank McLaren, they gave me an incredible car.”
