While Oscar Piastri is smiling, now just three points behind teammate Lando Norris in the standings, Lando certainly can’t rejoice, given the poor feeling with the new 2025 McLaren. Despite leading the championship and despite reaching the podium in Sakhir, the Brit cannot be satisfied with his sensations in the car. McLaren appears dominant at the start of this season, yet the 1999-born driver is unable to get the best out of a car he still hasn’t managed to tame.
“How can I get the feeling back with the car? I wish I had the answer,” said the British driver during the post-race press conference. “I don’t have an answer, and even if I did, I wouldn’t share it with you guys,” Lando Norris continued. Then he tried to describe his feelings: “You know, when you’re an athlete, a driver, you know exactly when that ‘click’ happens in terms of confidence and feeling comfortable.”
Lando Norris and that still-missing feeling with the 2025 F1 McLaren
That click in feeling with the McLaren hasn’t happened yet for Lando Norris. “I know I have what it takes to turn things around. I have no doubts about that, but something still hasn’t clicked with this car.” The Papaya driver can’t find those enjoyable sensations behind the wheel that were present in 2024. “I can’t do any of those laps I was able to do last year. Back then I knew exactly how the car would behave in any corner. I felt in control of my car. This year, so far, it couldn’t be more different—the feeling is the opposite!”
“Even in Australia, where I won, I never really felt comfortable,” Lando Norris said after the Bahrain Grand Prix. “The car is simply great. That’s helping me mask a lot of the issues I’m currently having. It’s hard to admit, but I’m nowhere near the potential I have.” – he pointed out.
Despite hours spent with the team ahead of the Sakhir race, Lando Norris still hasn’t fully understood the reasons behind his poor feeling with the new McLaren. “There’s just something that hasn’t clicked, so I don’t feel good in the car. But I don’t doubt myself, even if it might sound like that from some of the comments.”
