A derby growing more intense
Only three points separate Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the standings after exactly one-third of the championship, with the Australian holding the edge. Every detail in the internal battle at the papaya team could prove decisive, and this was evident already in Spanish GP qualifying, where the two McLaren teammates locked out the front row. Oscar Piastri got the better of the direct duel, edging out the second MCL39 by 209 thousandths.
During Thursday’s media day, Oscar Piastri had assured that there would be no foul play between the two rival teammates, but also acknowledged that the battle was very much on. That became crystal clear today in Q3, where both drivers used every little trick to gain the upper hand. In the first attempt, in particular, Lando Norris latched onto Oscar Piastri as the latter completed his flying lap, aiming to launch his own timed effort with a slipstream boost.
It was a clever move, but one that the championship leader was quick to counter: as noted by various news media outlets through his telemetry, Oscar Piastri slammed on the brakes—while moving off the racing line—just past the finish line to avoid giving any kind of help to the other McLaren. A shrewd move that paid off: Norris had been slightly quicker by just a few thousandths in the first run, but couldn’t fully exploit the tow.
In the second attempt, however, the Aussie made the difference, claiming the fastest time and securing his fourth career pole position. The best way to try to return to victory tomorrow after settling for third place in the past two GPs.
