McLaren Racing, valued at $5 billion, is now 100% owned by Bahrain and Abu Dhabi sovereign funds
Mumtalakat remains the majority shareholder
The value of McLaren Racing has multiplied tenfold in just five years. From £560 million in 2020 to the current $5 billion valuation, McLaren has steadily grown, dominating Formula 1 while also preparing to debut in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) after previously competing in Formula E, Extreme E, and of course, IndyCar. In 2020, during the pandemic, McLaren required additional funds and was valued at £560 million when the US investment group MSP and other investors acquired a significant minority stake (no more than 33%) in McLaren Racing.
A highly successful investment
The investment has proven exceptionally successful, as the sovereign wealth funds of Bahrain and Abu Dhabi have recently completed the acquisition of 100% ownership of McLaren Racing, paying a staggering sum as the Woking-based team is now valued at $5 billion.
The Bahraini sovereign fund Mumtalakat will remain the majority shareholder, while CYVN, majority-owned by the Abu Dhabi government, will hold a minority stake. CYVN created McLaren Group Holdings last April after completing the acquisition of sports car manufacturer McLaren Automotive. McLaren Group confirmed the purchase of all shares previously held by MSP Sports Capital, as well as funds managed by O’Connor Capital Solutions, Ares Sports, Media and Entertainment Funds, and Caspian Funds.
