Verstappen: “I might never win another F1 title and I’ll give young drivers a chance in my team, I don’t want to look like an idiot”
The four-time world champion will retire the #1 after this season
After four dominant seasons in Formula 1, Max Verstappen is preparing to say goodbye to the #1 at the end of a 2025 season led by McLaren. The Red Bull driver is currently third in the Drivers’ Championship and must keep George Russell at bay to remain on the championship podium at the end of the season. Max Verstappen has won two races in 2025, at Suzuka and Imola, but he seems no longer to have the full potential required to aim for another victory that would have been his 66th in F1.
The Dutchman is very serene
Speaking to ESPN during the Dutch Grand Prix, Max Verstappen appeared calm regarding his career achievements and emphasized that he has many racing projects outside Formula 1: “I am very happy and proud of what I have accomplished so far. I think this is already more than I could have ever dreamed of when I started racing. Maybe I won’t win another championship – that’s something that could happen – but I don’t dwell on it too much.”
“I have many racing-related projects, but I don’t think they necessarily require my full involvement in the future,” he added, referring to his already initiated managerial role in the GT World Challenge. “Of course, in the beginning, it’s important to set everything up properly. I would like to continue racing after I retire from F1, but I actually don’t mind the managerial aspect either, seeing other drivers race with your car and your team. It will also depend on how fast I am because, at some point, you get slower with age, and then perhaps it’s better to make room for young drivers. I don’t want to look like an idiot.”
