McLaren set to clinch constructors’ championship in Singapore with just 13 points
Just a little is enough
The disappointing weekend in Baku prevented McLaren from achieving a historic milestone by securing the constructors’ championship seven races before the end of the season. However, the papaya team is now on the verge of celebrating its second consecutive world title – the tenth in the team’s history – this Sunday in Singapore. If successful, the historic British squad would equal the record set by Red Bull in 2023, when the constructors’ championship was also won with six races remaining.
Points situation heading into Singapore
After the Singapore Grand Prix, a maximum of 303 points will still be available, coming from six races and three sprint events. Currently, McLaren holds a lead of 333 points over Mercedes and 337 over Ferrari. Red Bull, in fourth and 351 points behind, is already mathematically out of contention. This means that for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, just 13 points at Marina Bay would be enough to secure the team championship. Even a single podium finish by one of the two MCL39 cars would trigger the papaya celebration. So far this year, McLaren has collected fewer than 13 points in only two races – Canada and Baku.
What if Singapore goes wrong?
Even if McLaren has another disappointing weekend in Singapore, Mercedes would need an extraordinary effort to delay the Woking team’s coronation. George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli would have to score at least 31 points more than the Norris-Piastri duo, which would require at least a double podium finish. Ferrari’s chances of postponing McLaren’s celebration are even slimmer. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton would need to collect 35 points more than the two McLaren drivers, meaning at minimum a race win for one driver and a podium for the other.
McLaren will be champions in Singapore if…
- They score at least 13 points
- Mercedes does not score at least 31 points more
- Ferrari does not score at least 35 points more
