Leonardo Fornaroli’s path to F1: which teams could sign the Italian talent for 2026
Another Italian is aiming for Formula 1. Leonardo Fornaroli, just 20 years old from Piacenza, is looking for a seat as early as 2026. The young driver, who became Formula 3 champion last season and is now leading the Formula 2 standings, faces a crucial turning point in his career. If he wins the F2 title, he will no longer be allowed to remain in the series, meaning his future must be tied to Formula 1. For such a talented prospect, staying connected to the pinnacle of motorsport is essential.
A crowded F1 grid with limited opportunities
After spending years away from the radar of the top category, Leonardo Fornaroli is now pushing to secure a Formula 1 contract, even if it means starting as a reserve driver. The problem is that available seats are scarce and competition is fierce. Red Bull has already narrowed down its candidates for the second seat alongside Max Verstappen, with Isack Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda as the main contenders, while Alexander Albon is also considered a possible option. In addition, the team is preparing to promote Arvid Lindblad to Racing Bulls, making an entry into the Red Bull system highly unlikely for Leonardo Fornaroli, especially given the depth of their junior academy.
The other available option on the grid is the second Alpine seat next to Pierre Gasly. However, the French team already has its attention focused on Paul Aron and Jack Doohan, depending on whether Franco Colapinto secures a place or not. This again makes Fornaroli’s chances slim.
Could Audi become a real opportunity for Fornaroli?
According to a report from Ludo van Denderen of GPBlog.com, Fornaroli’s management team is therefore exploring the option of a third driver contract for 2026. Breaking into top outfits such as McLaren, Ferrari, or Mercedes looks unlikely, since those teams already have plenty of candidates lined up for reserve roles. He is also not currently on the radar of Aston Martin, Haas, or Williams, which further limits his options.
However, the new entries on the grid could open doors. Cadillac is strongly linked with American driver Colton Herta, but Audi is still searching for a reserve driver. The German manufacturer has already shown a clear commitment to promoting young talent, as seen with the confirmation of Gabriel Bortoleto for next season. In this context, Mattia Binotto could look at Leonardo Fornaroli as a potential option for the future, especially in the event of a post-Hulkenberg scenario.
