Toto Wolff has admitted that he would not be afraid to pair Max Verstappen with Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes in the future. Although such a formidable line-up remains only a medium-term possibility, the Mercedes team principal believes he could manage two drivers representing the present and future of Formula 1.
The prospect would naturally have major implications for George Russell, whose difficult 2026 season has changed the internal picture at Mercedes. The British driver remains part of the team’s immediate plans, but he is under pressure to produce a stronger second half of the campaign.
Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli represent F1’s present and future
The days when Toto Wolff was openly courting Max Verstappen may seem distant, but the Austrian has never entirely abandoned the idea of bringing the four-time world champion to Mercedes. The subject is discussed less frequently because the priorities at Brackley have changed.
Toto Wolff’s long-term planning created the foundations for Kimi Antonelli’s emergence, transforming Max Verstappen from a necessity into a luxury. The young Italian has established himself as one of Formula 1’s leading talents, although former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola has explained why Kimi Antonelli’s development is not yet complete.
Nevertheless, Toto Wolff may be in a position to pursue that luxury and appears strongly tempted by the possibility. Just as he had the courage to promote Kimi Antonelli, he would also be prepared to place Max Verstappen alongside the Bologna-born driver in a partnership combining Formula 1’s established benchmark with one of its brightest young stars.
Toto Wolff would not fear a Verstappen-Antonelli Mercedes pairing
A Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli partnership is a possibility Toto Wolff has considered for the medium-term future. Max Verstappen is unlikely to leave Red Bull ahead of the 2027 season, with his current contract running until the end of 2028, while Mercedes cannot simply discard George Russell because of one difficult half-season.
Speculation surrounding the four-time world champion’s future has nevertheless persisted, including renewed discussion after Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff’s holiday photographs brought their relationship back into focus.
Asked by Sky Deutschland about potentially bringing the two drivers together, Toto Wolff made it clear that the prospect would not intimidate him.
“Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen come from different generations, but I am not afraid of having them in the same team at some point,” Toto Wolff said.
“I have seen and dealt with worse, such as the pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg. I would manage it differently today.”
Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg’s intensely competitive relationship produced sustained success for Mercedes but also created repeated tension as they fought for the Formula 1 world championship. Toto Wolff’s comments suggest the experience would influence how he handled another potentially explosive partnership.
What the scenario could mean for George Russell
If Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli were eventually united at Mercedes, George Russell would naturally be the driver expected to make way. Such a scenario would have appeared almost unthinkable only a few months ago, but the British driver’s disappointing 2026 campaign has left him as the team’s second choice.
Questions have consequently emerged over George Russell’s long-term position at Mercedes. However, there is no indication of an immediate change, and George Russell still has the second half of the season to reverse the trend with an improving run of performances.
For now, a Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli Mercedes partnership remains a future possibility rather than a confirmed plan. Toto Wolff’s remarks nevertheless show that he would be willing to consider the imposing line-up—and believes his experience of managing Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg has prepared him for the challenge.
