Max Verstappen, high-stakes victories
A hallmark of champions is their ability to perform at their best under pressure. Max Verstappen has little to learn in this regard and seems to thrive when expectations are at their peak, unlike his 2024 rival, Lando Norris.
In 2023, it was virtually impossible to challenge Verstappen given that he was driving the RB19, Adrian Newey‘s unparalleled masterpiece. However, in the recently concluded season, rivals saw more opportunities. To the extent possible, they tried to take advantage, both on and off the track. With a competitive car, Lando Norris was the boldest, but in every duel, Verstappen intimidated him, even resorting to questionable tactics (as seen in Mexico) to slow him down. Off the track, it was George Russell who criticized Verstappen’s behavior, leading to a heated argument between qualifying and the Qatar GP. Max Verstappen also frequently clashed with the FIA, as seen in the post-Mexico City controversies and the Interlagos qualifying session, where he was eliminated in Q2—just a few of the many disputes in 2024.
Max Verstappen’s words
There is a common thread linking these events: after every controversy, Verstappen always emerged victorious. He won in Brazil and repeated the feat in Qatar, both with commanding performances (the first by storming through the field in the rain from 17th position, the second with fierce determination, even demanding a penalty for Norris, who failed to slow down under double yellow flags). When this pattern is pointed out to him, Verstappen wastes no time in delivering a strong message to his rivals: “Yes, if you fuel my ambition, things will go well for me,” he stated in an interview with *Blick*.
The Dutchman emphasized that he will remain the same driver, even if the FIA changes the rules for duels: “I won’t change my driving style. I know when I’ve crossed the line. For instance, in Abu Dhabi, I hit Oscar Piastri at the start. I had no problem apologizing to him after the race.” – the four-time Formula 1 world champion concluded.
