Max Verstappen’s leadership drawing Michael Schumacher comparisons from Ralf. Ralf Schumacher compares Max Verstappen to his brother Michael.

Ralf Schumacher, 2024

According to Ralf Schumacher, Max Verstappen possesses the same level of talent as his brother Michael Schumacher. But the comparison goes beyond pure speed. For many, the way Verstappen manages and influences his team is strikingly similar to how Michael Schumacher once operated. This is the core of Ralf Schumacher’s analysis, in which he praised the Dutch champion for the decisive role he played in holding Red Bull together during one of the most turbulent seasons in the team’s recent history.

The 2025 Formula 1 season proved to be an extremely complex year for Red Bull, marked by the departure of Christian Horner after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the arrival of Laurent Mekies as the new team principal, and a car that initially fell well short of the standards the team had become accustomed to.

There were many difficulties at Red Bull

According to Ralf Schumacher, the delayed change at the top of the team created internal confusion. Speaking to F1 Insider, he explained:

“You could see it very clearly. Helmut Marko said it openly: the decision to let Horner go was taken too late. The result was chaos, until the car became competitive again.”

The turning point came in the second half of the season. With the introduction of a new floor at Monza and with Laurent Mekies now fully settled into his role as team principal, Red Bull gradually rediscovered unity and confidence. Throughout this phase, Max Verstappen was the undisputed reference point inside the team.

The Dutch driver went on to win seven of the final nine races of the season, leading a remarkable comeback that, while not enough to secure the championship, allowed Red Bull to put sustained pressure on McLaren right until the end of the year. Reflecting on this resurgence, Ralf Schumacher stated:

“The team grew into a real unit. Especially with Mekies and the group of engineers around Max. It was a great team effort.”

Ralf Schumacher compares Verstappen to Michael Schumacher

For Ralf Schumacher, the true differentiating factor was the driver himself. Not just Verstappen’s raw speed — already evident in comparisons with teammates such as Yuki Tsunoda or Liam Lawson — but his leadership abilities and his impact on the people around him.

“Max manages to extract something extra from the car, but above all from the people. He has that same aura Michael had. He knows how to unite the team, how to lead, how to make others ready to throw themselves into the fire for him. That is what really makes the difference.”

In Ralf Schumacher’s view, it is this combination of technical excellence, mental strength and natural authority that elevates Max Verstappen beyond being simply a fast driver. Much like Michael Schumacher before him, Verstappen has become the focal point of an entire organisation — a leader capable of shaping the direction, confidence and ambition of the team around him.
