“This year started with many fast drivers. It wasn’t the easiest way to enter Formula 1. I had Jack [Doohan, ed.] as a teammate and I tried to support him as much as possible on and off the track. The decision, in the end, was up to the team,” explained the French driver to the media in Imola.
Speaking about the rotation of drivers, Pierre Gasly said: “We have many drivers in the team and we feel the need to evaluate the performance of Franco Colapinto, who did very well last year. That’s why he was included, to give him this opportunity. For me, it’s the same with both Jack and Franco. I worked well with Doohan and I will certainly do the same with Colapinto.”
His relationship with Oakes and the technical changes
“I’d say we all worked very well together. Obviously, I’m sad to see him leave the team. On the other hand, it was Olli’s personal choice and we have to accept and respect it.”
Pierre Gasly then commented on the series of leadership changes within the team: “Our individual work doesn’t change. The direction remains the same as before. There is no disagreement within the team, no internal fractures. The vision and the path are the same, before and after Miami.”
“Headlines don’t reflect all the good work I see in the factory or even in the race team. The work we’re doing behind the scenes is really good. When these kinds of changes happen, people will always talk, but what matters is the day-to-day work,” continued Pierre Gasly.
Pierre Gasly’s view on Alpine’s future
“Flavio Briatore will just have a slightly broader role in the team. For me, everything has stayed the same,” he added, referring to recent management developments.
As for expectations in the upcoming races, Pierre Gasly responded to the accredited media:
“We weren’t given much time to analyze and react. Imola is a particular track, and so is Monaco, but they usually suit our car better. Barcelona has been good in the past. I’m confident we’ll be back fighting for points.”
