His distinctive personality has contributed to that divide. Max Verstappen is brutally direct, unwilling to compromise and far removed from carefully polished public statements. Yet he is also loving towards his family and remarkably approachable and kind with his fans.

Nina’s long battle and her passion for Max Verstappen
The young fan at the heart of the story is Nina, affectionately known as Ninka, a Slovakian teenager who has admired the four-time world champion since childhood. Her bedroom is filled with Max Verstappen memorabilia and, according to her family’s social-media account, she even takes a pillow bearing a picture of her idol with her during stays in the oncology ward.
Nina’s life has been shaped by an extremely difficult battle. At only nine years old, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. She overcame the illness after a long course of surgery and chemotherapy.
It appeared to be the beginning of a new life, with Nina returning to school and dreaming of studying architecture. Sadly, the disease returned in February 2026, this time affecting her sternum and forcing her to undergo further treatment and operations.
A special birthday present and the journey to Budapest
Knowing how much Max Verstappen meant to her, Nina’s family and several people connected to Red Bull tried to turn her dream into reality. For her 18th birthday, she received a special gift: a picture of Max Verstappen’s car carrying a personal dedication, along with two tickets to the Hungarian Grand Prix and the promise of meeting the Dutch champion.
Doctors adjusted Nina’s treatment schedule so that she could make the journey to Budapest. She prepared every detail carefully, including a wig resembling her usual hair, because she wanted to look her best in the photograph she had dreamed about for years.
However, circumstances appeared to be working against her. Extensive motorway roadworks caused extremely long traffic queues, and the family reached the Hungaroring after the scheduled meeting had already ended.
Nina burst into tears in the car, believing she had lost her only opportunity to meet her hero. A few minutes later, however, a telephone call changed everything: “Ninka, come. Max has found some time for you.”

Although he already had other commitments, Max Verstappen decided to return and set aside a few moments to meet her. The encounter lasted only a short time, with a handshake, a smile and a photograph, but for Nina it became a memory that will remain with her throughout her life.
The compassionate moment offered a very different perspective on a driver whose fierce competitive character had again attracted attention during the weekend, including through Max Verstappen’s unaired Hungary team radio. His actions towards Nina showed the human being behind the helmet and the importance a brief meeting can hold for a devoted supporter.
