At the center of the Formula 1 Drivers’ market
During the 2024 Formula 1 season, one of the most discussed topics within the paddock has been Max Verstappen’s future. Despite having signed a contract that ties him to the Red Bull team until the end of 2028, speculations about a short- or medium-term move have persisted. Internal conflicts at the Milton Keynes team in the early months of the championship, advances from Mercedes and Aston Martin, and the decline in performance of the RB20 were all factors that led to thoughts of a potential early departure for the three-time world champion.
Max Verstappen seemed to genuinely entertain the idea of switching teams only when the possibility of Helmut Marko’s departure was mentioned. However, once that ’emergency’ subsided, the #1 from Hasselt has often reaffirmed his loyalty to his current employers. During the Mexico weekend, the current championship leader reiterated this sentiment in an interview with the French news agency AFP.
Loyal to the contract
“Honoring the contract until 2028? That is clearly my intention,” began the Red Bull driver. The Dutchman added that he has not been in contact with other teams: “For me, the situation has never changed since I signed my contract with Red Bull. It’s true that this year we’ve had difficult moments, but I’ve always focused on looking for improvements in the car’s performance. I’m at Red Bull, and I want to do well. We want to get back to the top together and win races again. It’s been a while since we’ve succeeded.” – he pointed out ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix
A clear message, which ties into the not insignificant factor of Mercedes’ secured seats with the duo of Kimi Antonelli – George Russell. Looking ahead, the only real concern for Red Bull regarding Max Verstappen’s future seems to come from Aston Martin.
