The arrival of Max Verstappen in Formula 1 was, without any doubt, a real shock for the entire paddock of the World Championship. The first reason was his very young age at the time of his debut, since he competed in his first Grand Prix at only 17 years old back in 2015. That is now ten years ago, but the impression he made has remained unforgettable. The second reason was the way in which he burned through the stages of his early career in the highest category of motorsport, advancing much faster than anyone expected.
After just a single season in Formula 1 with Toro Rosso, Max Verstappen was promoted to the senior Red Bull Racing team, which was already a top contender. Incredibly, he managed to win immediately at his debut with the Milton Keynes squad, leaving everyone stunned by both the extraordinary natural talent he possessed and the rapid growth path he had already undertaken.
Since that first race with Red Bull, which came at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has always had Gianpiero Lambiase by his side as race engineer. Their partnership, which began as a strictly professional collaboration, soon evolved into something much deeper. Over the years it became stronger and stronger, even managing to overcome some moments of tension and heated exchanges, something common in high-pressure Formula 1 environments.
Lambiase explains the “limits” of Max Verstappen
For this reason, Gianpiero Lambiase – the British engineer of Italian origin – is arguably the person who knows four-time world champion Max Verstappen better than anyone else in the paddock. This was exactly the focus of his recent appearance on the official Red Bull podcast “Behind the Charge”.
During the interview, the senior race engineer revealed not only Verstappen’s strengths but also his more difficult sides, including his so-called limits, which can hardly be noticed from the outside given the immense performances he delivers on track.
“The limit of Max is his stubbornness. He knows everything, and so trying to get inside his head and really understand him is a true engineering challenge. Over time I have learned to accept that even if he seems to reject your advice, in reality he absorbs it like a sponge and – even though he will never admit it – in the end he does exactly what you asked him to do.”
Limits and qualities
In the same podcast, Gianpiero Lambiase also took the opportunity to praise his driver. He highlighted not only Verstappen’s qualities in general but also his importance for the future, with particular attention to the major 2026 Formula 1 regulation change, which is widely expected to be the most significant overhaul of the last two decades.
“The team understands what Max needs in order to extract the absolute maximum performance from the car. And at the same time, he understands what the team requires from him in terms of feedback to develop the car properly. I am not only talking about the current car, but also about the cars of the future. This will be something crucial when the new regulations arrive in the next season.”
With these words, Lambiase underlined how the synergy between Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing will be one of the key assets for the team, not only to maintain competitiveness in the present but also to prepare for the revolution of 2026, when Formula 1 will experience a new era that many hope will reshape the hierarchy of the sport.
