Max Verstappen, the Teammate Crusher
At 27 years old, Max Verstappen can be considered a “young veteran” of Formula 1. Having debuted in the sport as a minor, he has been on the grid for a decade and, barring early retirement, is likely to remain in the sport for many more years.
In this first half of his F1 career, Max Verstappen has outclassed many of his teammates—drivers like Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, and Sergio Perez know this all too well. The exceptions date back to Max Verstappen’s early years in Formula 1: Carlos Sainz (during their time at Toro Rosso) and Daniel Ricciardo (his first Red Bull teammate) managed to hold their own. Ricciardo remains the only teammate to have beaten Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings over an entire season in the same car (2017).
Max Verstappen’s comments
That was a different Max Verstappen, and it was also a different Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian was an invaluable learning experience for “Super Max.” “Daniel was definitely the strongest teammate I’ve had. I learned a lot from him. I absorbed so much and incorporated those lessons into my skill set,” Max Verstappen told *Blick*.
Finally, Max Verstappen shared his thoughts on Sergio Perez, who was let go by Red Bull a few weeks ago: “It’s a shame because we were a good team for four years. Sergio was always loyal, and that’s a quality I really appreciate. Lawson? If we can get the car back to the front, the name of the other driver won’t matter.”
