Benefiting from Oscar Piastri’s difficult race, the number 4 driver of McLaren continues to close the gap in the title fight. During the post-race interviews in parc fermé, Norris expressed his satisfaction with the result, clearly pleased with the outcome of his tough battle against the Ferrari driver.
Leclerc stoic, but Lando Norris prevails: “I thought it would be easier!”
After 56 laps at the Circuit of the Americas, freshly renewed with Formula 1 until 2030, Lando Norris reduced the gap to his championship-leading teammate thanks to a second-place finish, eight seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen. Speaking after the race in parc fermé, Norris analyzed his performance in Texas and focused in particular on the close duel with Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.
“It took a lot to get past him, but I managed to do it!” Norris explained with a smile. “It was a great fight with Charles; we battled really hard. I thought it would be easier to overtake him, but it wasn’t—Charles was very strong and drove really well,” added the McLaren driver. “I have to accept this second place. There wasn’t much more I could have done,” he concluded, acknowledging Verstappen’s superior pace during the American Grand Prix.
Lando Norris was able to beat his Ferrari rival thanks to careful tire management during the final stint of the race. Struggling to attack the red car immediately after the pit stop, he followed the advice of his race engineer to prepare his decisive strike against the Monegasque driver. “When your tires are fresh after the stop, you can push, but once they start heating up, it gets harder,” Norris explained. “That’s why I lifted off for a few laps to let the tires breathe, and it worked.”
By slightly backing off and moving his McLaren out of the dirty air created by Charles Leclerc’s SF-25, Norris allowed his tires to cool and regain optimal grip levels. The strategic move paid off: once he closed the gap again in the final laps, the British driver launched his decisive attack under braking into Turn 12, pulling off a clean and spectacular overtake to secure second place on the podium.
