Max Verstappen questions penalty after Saudi GP incident with Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen voices his frustration over the 5-second penalty received in the Saudi Arabian GP.

Max Verstappen, Christian Horner 2024

Despite taking pole position in yesterday’s qualifying for the Saudi Arabian GP, Max Verstappen had to surrender victory to McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

The Saudi Arabian GP began on the back foot for Max Verstappen, who, after a less-than-ideal start, was immediately challenged by Oscar Piastri’s overtaking attempt that forced the Dutch driver to cut the first corner. After review, the stewards handed Verstappen a 5-second penalty. Verstappen responded immediately over team radio. According to the Dutchman, the mistake at Turn 1 was caused by Piastri, who, in his view, didn’t leave enough space to complete the corner. Was Max Verstappen lacking clarity in Turn 1?

Ferrari’s Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc completed the podium in Jeddah. The four-time World Champion served his 5-second penalty during the pit stop but was no longer able to put pressure on the Australian driver afterward.

Verstappen’s anger over the penalty
After the race, Max Verstappen said: “I’ll be brief, I just want to thank the fans here in Jeddah, it’s a fantastic track and the rest went how it went. I can’t wait to get to Miami, see you there.” The four-time World Champion is eager for redemption and is already looking ahead to the Miami GP.

The Red Bull driver kept his comments minimal after the Saudi Arabian GP and avoided discussing the race or the penalty. Verstappen did not seem pleased and chose to answer just one question instead of two. The mistake at Turn 1, and the resulting penalty, conditioned the Dutch driver’s entire race.
